[EXES] Chapter 23 – Maybe I’m Just an Ordinary Friend to You

Fang Yiyang didn’t speak. Su Mu didn’t rush him either. After a while, Fang Yiyang finally choked up and haltingly recounted what had happened.

It had been the young man Fang Yiyang had just killed. After his ability was utterly exhausted, he shoved Fang Yiyang toward the zombies to use him as a shield. Fang Yihan reacted quickly, throwing himself forward to block the zombies with his own body and pushing his younger brother back. As a result, Fang Yihan was swallowed by the horde, buying his brother a chance to survive—but… in the chaos, Fang Yiyang was still clawed by a zombie.

Being scratched by a zombie meant there was only a 5% chance of not becoming infected.

Su Mu remembered clearly that the person who had tried to lure the zombies toward them earlier was the same one Fang Yiyang had just killed.

Someone like that truly deserved to die.

Fang Yiyang straightened up. It was still the same face, yet the feeling he gave off had changed entirely. There was a faint ruthlessness between his brows. Beneath it, a fragility so deeply buried it was almost impossible to notice.

With a stiff expression, Fang Yiyang said, “I was scratched by a zombie. There’s a high chance I’ll get infected. I’ll find a place to hide. If I don’t come back by noon tomorrow, that means I’ve turned. You should go to the H City base yourselves—don’t worry about me.”

Without the slightest hesitation, he turned and left.

Su Mu glanced at Fang Yiyang’s arm. A long claw mark ran across it, the flesh torn open grotesquely, pale bone faintly visible beneath. Darkened blood continuously seeped from the wound, making it a horrifying sight.

Who knew how badly his own back had been torn up?

Seeing everyone hesitate, Su Mu reached out and took Su Wanmei’s hand, then lifted it to his lips and kissed it gently. Su Wanmei clutched his hand tightly, her fingers trembling uncontrollably.

Meeting her reddened eyes, Su Mu curved his lips slightly. He said nothing more to her, only turning to the others.

“I was scratched by a zombie, too. Take my mom back.”

As he spoke, he forcefully shook off Su Wanmei’s hand, knocked her unconscious, and handed her to Jiang Sheng. Then he strode off in the direction Fang Yiyang had gone.

Everyone was stunned by his words. It wasn’t until Su Mu turned around that they saw the terrifying wound across his shoulder and back—far worse than Fang Yiyang’s. From Su Mu’s wound, the blood flowing out was pitch-black, like freshly ground ink.

Only when the zombie virus had spread throughout the body, right before full zombification, would blood turn black-red.

Yet Su Mu’s blood was completely, utterly black.

Jiang Sheng clenched his fists hard, cupping his hands around his mouth as he shouted, “Master Su, you have to come back alive!”

Lu Shuangshuang’s eyes were red as she stared fixedly at Su Mu’s retreating figure. Suddenly, she rushed forward. Su Mu sensed the movement and turned his head.

Seeing it was her, he asked calmly, “What is it?”

Tears fell nonstop. Lu Shuangshuang cried as she spoke, her voice shaking.

“Thank you, Mu Tou. If you hadn’t blocked those attacks for me with your blade earlier, I definitely would’ve been scratched. You’re a good person. You have to come back alive—please, hang on, don’t get infected. Auntie Su still needs you… I’ll wait for you too. Even if, to you, I’m just an ordinary friend… I really… really—”

Su Mu looked at her tear-streaked face in silence, his expression unreadable. Then he suddenly reached out and gently ruffled her hair.

“You’re a good girl.”

After that, he withdrew his hand. A faint smile curved his lips, and under the sunlight, that subtle arc appeared exquisitely gentle—so much so that a single glance felt like it could shine straight into the depths of one’s heart.

It was the first time Lu Shuangshuang had ever seen Su Mu smile at her so openly. She froze slightly, feeling as though something inside her chest had suddenly thumped hard once.
