[EXES] Chapter 46: Having Exhausted All His Courage and Hope

After filling his stomach, Su Mu switched seats with Jiang Sheng, who had initially been sitting in the passenger seat. He quickly quieted down and began to doze off. Although absorbing crystal cores could replenish energy and mental strength, it couldn’t replace sleep—especially since he had stayed up the entire night on watch yesterday.

Su Mu was a light sleeper to begin with. The slightest movement could wake him up. And now, strictly abiding by the rule of beware of fire, beware of thieves, and beware of Luo Beiyao, he didn’t dare relax at all. The moment he sensed warm breath drawing close, he hurriedly opened his eyes—but only managed to catch a fleeting flash of purple light in Luo Beiyao’s gaze before his consciousness plunged into darkness.

The young man’s lean waist was tightly restrained as Luo Beiyao smoothly pulled him into his arms. He pressed an intimate kiss to Su Mu’s pale forehead, then casually swept his gaze across the truck cabin, where everyone was wearing stunned expressions. The corner of his lips lifted slightly.
“What are you all staring at? Have you assigned today’s night watch yet?”

No matter how slow on the uptake Lu Shuangshuang was, she could tell something was wrong now. As if realizing something, her face changed slightly.
“B-Boss… you and Su Mu, he—”

Luo Beiyao gently tidied the slightly messy strands of hair on Su Mu’s forehead. Completely unconcerned with how many people were secretly listening in, he spoke openly,
“Su Mu is my lover. We had a small disagreement recently, so… you understand what I mean, right?”

His gaze lingered pointedly on Lu Shuangshuang’s face, pale with disbelief. Then he leaned down and planted an affectionate kiss on Su Mu’s cheek. The gloom that had long clouded his phoenix eyes suddenly cleared a great deal.

Once, because Su Mu had suddenly proposed breaking up—after getting close to a wealthy man and dumping him without hesitation—resentment and unwillingness had taken root in his heart.

He clung stubbornly, thinking that as long as he dragged things out, he could hold onto the always soft-hearted Su Mu. But he never expected that this time, Su Mu’s resolve would be firmer than ever before. For the first time in his life, to keep someone from leaving, he threw his dignity to the ground and crushed it underfoot—yet all he got in return was a single word: breakup.

Even now, Luo Beiyao could still clearly remember how Su Mu had once promised to marry him once they reached the legal age. In the months leading up to Su Mu’s birthday, he had worked himself to the bone, pulling overtime like a madman to earn more money so he could give him an unforgettable birthday, then use the savings he had accumulated over the years to go abroad and get married.

But just a few days before that birthday, Su Mu broke up with him.

Every word Su Mu said that day, every single sentence, was like a blade, carving into his heart again and again until it was left riddled with holes.

He would never forget it.

Su Mu had always been gentle by nature. Even on the day they broke up, his tone was still soft. He said: “Ah Yao, I really, truly loved you before. But without money, even the most profound feelings will eventually be worn away. I’ve already had enough of living at someone else’s mercy.”

Luo Beiyao had never cared about material possessions. As long as he had Su Mu, it was enough. But he wanted Su Mu to live well, so he worked day and night without rest—and, out of selfishness, he forbade Su Mu from going out to work.

He was always afraid someone else would covet Su Mu. Yet no matter how tightly he guarded him, he still lost him in the end.

He never believed Su Mu broke up with him because he despised him for being poor. He thought it was far more likely that his own excessive possessiveness had made Su Mu grow tired, or that Su Mu had been enduring everything in silence, letting all his grievances pile up until they finally erupted that day, leading him to ask for a breakup.

But no matter how much he apologized or promised to change, Su Mu showed no intention of turning back—until the day he followed Su Mu and saw him being picked up and taken into a high-end club.

In that instant, all of his persistence turned to ashes.

He didn’t even know how he managed to walk back home that day.

The scene of Su Mu breaking up with him replayed endlessly in his mind, stabbing at his heart until it ached unbearably.
