[EXES] Chapter 42 – Fingers Interlaced, Hearts Connected

Luo Beiyao took things a step further, reaching out to grip Su Mu’s wrist. When he saw that Su Mu didn’t pull away, the corner of his mouth couldn’t help but lift slightly.

Su Mu pressed his crimson lips together, repeatedly telling himself that they were both men—
holding hands was no big deal.

Back when he was with his close comrades, they’d practically grown up wearing the same pair of pants. Living conditions in the apocalypse were harsh; they’d even bathed together in public bathhouses. Compared to that, holding hands was nothing at all.

If it weren’t for the fact that Luo Beiyao was gay—and that Su Mu had landed right in the aftermath of a mess the moment he transmigrated—he truly felt that two men holding hands wasn’t a big deal. It wouldn’t make him lose a piece of flesh or anything.

But right now, he genuinely felt uncomfortable all over.

The grip on his wrist suddenly loosened. Luo Beiyao slid his fingers into Su Mu’s, interlocking them one by one.

Su Mu frowned as he looked at their tightly interlaced fingers.
“Don’t go too far,” he said quietly.

Luo Beiyao tightened his grip, feeling the warmth of skin against his palm and fingertips. His heart suddenly thudded violently—he could even clearly hear his own heartbeat speeding up.

Yet when he spoke, his voice was frighteningly calm, entirely at odds with his inner turmoil.
“Why don’t you push me away?”

Su Mu didn’t answer.

He only sensed that the truck had gradually fallen silent. When he raised his gaze slightly, he realized everyone was looking at him and Luo Beiyao with extremely complicated expressions.

His heart skipped. Unease rose as he tried to pull his hand back, but Luo Beiyao clenched his fingers tightly, not allowing him to escape.

It was just holding hands… What was the big deal???

Why was everyone staring at him?

Su Mu couldn’t quite process it. No matter how he struggled, he couldn’t break free of Luo Beiyao’s grip. He frowned and swept a glance over the group.
“What are you all looking at?”

Lu Shuangshuang swallowed hard.
“Y-you… uh… nothing?”

She was completely confused about what was going on between these two.

One moment, they were like mortal enemies—meeting only to fight to the death, hands at each other’s throats. The next, they were close enough to risk their lives diving into zombie hordes to save each other, now sticking together and interlocking fingers, radiating unmistakable gay energy.

Meanwhile, Su Wanmei had been observing them ever since Luo Beiyao leaned against Su Mu’s shoulder. When she finally saw their fingers interlaced, she couldn’t help wiping away tears, deeply moved.

These two children… Had they finally made up?

Jiang Sheng and Fang Yiyang—who knew the truth—were feeling a bit indescribable inside.

As for the others, they initially thought the two were acting kind of gay-ish, but seeing Su Mu’s calm, unreadable expression, they honestly didn’t know what to think anymore.

In the end, everyone harbored different thoughts—but no one asked anything out loud.

Luo Beiyao lifted their interlocked hands, gently pressing Su Mu’s loosely extended fingers down one by one, fitting them snugly against the back of his own hand. Only then did he seem satisfied. He pressed the back of Su Mu’s hand against his own face.

“Can you feel it?” he asked softly, “My face is really hot.”

A smile spread across Luo Beiyao’s lips, happiness spilling from the corners of his eyes. He was smiling brightly, but his voice was very light—as if he were afraid that if he spoke too loudly, this unreal dream would shatter on the spot.

“I think I’m a little shy.”

Su Mu, who had been desperately hypnotizing himself with we’re both men, finally couldn’t take it anymore.

He forcefully pulled his hand free. His cool peach-blossom eyes swept quickly over the people in the truck who kept sneaking glances their way. Leaning close to Luo Beiyao’s ear, he spoke slowly and coldly, enunciating every word:

“I’m warning you—don’t go too far. My patience has its limits.”

To outsiders, the two looked extremely close, whispering to each other in intimate tones.

But in reality, Su Mu was trying to make sure no one else heard his words—and noticed something they shouldn’t.
